Bedfordshire PCC demonstrates his commitment to transparency by sharing results of 360-degree appraisal

Bedfordshire’s Police and Crime Commissioner, John Tizard is affirming his commitment to transparency and accountability by sharing the results of his 360-degree appraisal.

At the end of the first year of his term and in line with his election pledge, the PCC invited 70 colleagues, stakeholders and partners to review his strengths and areas for development.

The PCC recently shared the report at the Police and Crime Panel. He received 48 responses from a wide range of stakeholders.

The questionnaire asked about how others view his approach and understanding of system-wide change and other elements of partnership working and strategy development. The outcomes were very positive and helped to reassure the PCC that his approach is correct.

Many of those who responded have been an integral part of the design of the PCC’s strategic direction, particularly those who have sat on the PCC’s mission boards to advise on specific areas. These multi-agency forums are representative of the whole-system approach the PCC has taken to his Police and Crime Plan.

The PCC said:

“I am committed to being open and transparent in everything I do as your Police and Crime Commissioner. By sharing the results of my 360 appraisal, I want to show that I welcome challenge, and I am always striving to improve, and deliver for the people of Bedfordshire.

“I am grateful to all partners and colleagues who took part in the process. I promise to keep listening and learning to deliver the best outcomes for Bedfordshire.”

Outcomes included the majority view that the PCC can visualise and communicate what is needed to improve safety and fairness in Bedfordshire, is ambitious and able to create attainable strategies; and is outstanding in supporting stakeholder relationships to get things done by the most appropriate partners.

The PCC also asked for respondents to identify areas for development, which found that the PCC could further open his work to challenge. To address these concerns, the PCC will be polling the public in Bedfordshire and undertaking public engagements to gain their views on his Police and Crime Plan. 

In his latest strategic direction update, the PCC committed to a 360 appraisal annually, where he will provide an update on his progress against actions. His next 360 appraisal will be in May 2026.
