Beds PCC hosts event to combat rural crime

The PCC said “Efficient and effective policing for the rural community of Bedfordshire means equitable allocation of resources available to combat serious crime and risk to life and property.

“These crimes, such as hare coursing, theft and fly tipping are a daily concern to farmers and rural residents.

“I am pleased to see the extensive work being undertaken by the dedicated Rural Crime Action Team, local community policing teams, patrol teams, and partnership working with local authorities and the NFU.

“However, more can be done. By having conversations such as this morning’s open event in Thurleigh, we are able to better understand where the gaps are in reporting, responding and tackling rural crime.

“This includes the need for better customer service for firearms license holders and building on the current training for frontline policing teams to combat crimes such as hare coursing.”

Bedfordshire Police’s Assistant Chief Constable John Murphy was also in attendance alongside members of the Rural Crime Action team (RCAT).

At the meeting, it was confirmed by ACC Murphy that over half a million pounds is being invested into the Firearms Licensing team for Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire and Hertfordshire.

Those who attended also heard of new training programmes for both specialised and frontline units to ensure the effectiveness of tackling crime affecting those living and working in rural communities.

The PCC announced he is establishing an ‘advisory group’ bringing together the NFU, wildlife organisations, town and parish councils, and the police.

Freya Morgan, Bedfordshire and Huntingdonshire Chair, from the NFU said “Rural crime is a major issue for farmers across Bedfordshire, with hare coursing, theft, assaults, and intimidation occurring frequently.

“Aside from the financial cost, this also has a significant impact on the mental health of the farming community.

“Therefore, we always welcome the opportunity to discuss how we can best tackle rural crime with the Police and Crime Commissioner, Bedfordshire Police, and the Rural Crime Action Team.

“The NFU are committed to working with the PCC, Bedfordshire Police and other partners, to stamp out rural crime.”
