PCC supports implementation of the Independent Sentencing Review

Commenting on the Independent Sentencing Review, which  sets out proposals to address prison and probation challenges and support victims, John Tizard, Police and Crime Commissioner for Bedfordshire said:

“The situation facing our criminal justice system is pressing, and needs urgent action.    

“As PCC and Chair of the Bedfordshire Local Criminal Justice Board (LCJB) I was supportive of the government commissioning this review of sentencing by David Gauke.

"I now welcome his recommendations especially proposing a greater focus on the use of community sentences and a significant reduction in the number of short-term prison sentences. These measures should lead to less reoffending and improve community safety. To achieve this, probation and community services will require adequate resources. 

“As Chair of the LCJB I will work with partners to implement the recommendations.

“I call on government to act quickly to implement its recommendations, which will have benefits for residents and communities in Bedfordshire.”
