PCC reports on a year of progress in making Bedfordshire safer and fairer

John Tizard, Police and Crime Commissioner for Bedfordshire has published his annual report for the year ending April 2026.

This is his second annual report.

In his report he has highlighted his focus on the prevention of crime and addressing its underlying causes.

The PCC said:

“My role is to make our county safer, to address social injustice, to drive improvement in police performance and across the wider criminal justice system, and to prevent crime.

“The social and economic causes of crime, criminality and people feeling unsafe and insecure need to be more widely understood and addressed. This requires political will and effective collaboration, as well as investment in prevention and early intervention.

“I have adopted an approach based on what I have called the triangle of hope, where the three sides of the triangle are social justice, criminal justice, and human rights. This triangle will guide my policies and activities over the next two years.”

In the report the PCC says that relations have been strengthened with the three local authorities, the NHS, education providers, and public bodies in the criminal justice system, though more remains to be done to build on these relationships to secure strong outcomes for the benefit of residents and businesses.

Further commenting on the report, the PCC said: “I have introduced radical change to the way in which I support and grant voluntary and community organisations. I am pleased to have introduced the Grassroots Innovation Fund to encourage and support innovative and experimental projects from small community groups without them being subject to bureaucratic barriers and hurdles.”

The PCC has been greatly impressed by the professionalism and commitment of police officers and police staff. He said it is a privilege to work with them, the criminal justice partners, local authorities, the wider public sector, the voluntary and community sector, businesses.
