Police and Crime Commissioner for Bedfordshire’s £195,000 to support victims affected by the early release of prisoners.

John Tizard, Police and Crime Commissioner for Bedfordshire has secured £195,000 from the Ministry of Justice (MoJ) to enhance support for victims affected by the early release of prisoners.

This funding will be allocated in conjunction with the current providers of support and advocacy services for victims of crime in the county. Some of these organisations will have additional support from the PCC to ensure that victims can access safeguarding and support measures where needed.

Local support for victims impacted by the early release scheme will be arranged through Bedfordshire Victims Support (BVS) which itself is funded by the PCC and MoJ. BVS will work closely with the Probation Service.

The PCC is encouraging anyone who feels concerned, vulnerable or affected by the changes to come forward and seek support.

PCC John Tizard said:

“I am pleased that the government has recognised that some victims of crimes committed by those prisoners on the early release scheme will want support and reassurance.  This funding allows us to build on and extend our existing support services in Bedfordshire, some of which already support victims when prisoners are released.

"Victims must remain at the heart of our criminal justice system.

"Whilst I acknowledge the pressures facing the prison system and support the government’s programme of early release where appropriate, I want victims to feel safe, supported and confident that their concerns are being taken seriously."

Victims can contact Victim Support's dedicated Offender Release Helpline on 0808 168 9280. The helpline provides emotional and practical support, information about the changes and guidance on accessing further help.

Victims can also self-refer through the Bedfordshire Victim Care Services (BVCS) website at www.bedfordshirevcs.com or can be referred by the Victim Support Helpline or Bedfordshire Police.
