Umme Ali was appointed as Deputy Police and Crime Commissioner for Bedfordshire in June 2024. In this role, she supports the Police and Crime Commissioner in delivering the county’s Police and Crime Plan. She leads on two Missions within the plan: Protecting Women and Children and Supporting Victims.
With a strong background in public service, Umme brings a wealth of experience to the role. Since 2021, Umme has served as a local councillor and is currently the cabinet member for Children’s Services at Luton Borough Council, where she leads on areas such as safeguarding and children’s social care in Luton. Alongside her political roles, she works part-time in the NHS as a Specialist Paediatric Dietician. She has a wide range of experience engaging with communities and community-based organisations and is a trustee for Luton Foodbank and Citizen’s Advice Bureau.
As Deputy PCC, Umme is passionate about championing the voices of victims and survivors, driving forward partnership working across Bedfordshire, and ensuring the system delivers a fair, trauma-informed response to all communities. She is particularly interested in prevention and early intervention in reducing violence against women and children, and supporting initiatives that address the root causes of harm to build safer, more resilient neighbourhoods.
