Fifteen teenagers have been given a unique opportunity to find out what working for Bedfordshire Police is like, after the force launched its very own work experience programme.OPCC and work experience students

The youngsters from schools across the county enjoyed a packed fortnight of activities at the force’s headquarters in Kempston.

They were given behind-the-scenes access to different departments, designed social media campaigns and also got to quiz Chief Constable Garry Forsyth and other senior leaders in the organisation about what they do.

Some 72 students had applied to the force to do work experience, with 15 candidates being given the opportunity.

PCSO Sally Simmonds, from Bedfordshire Police’s specialist education and diversion team, said: “It has been brilliant to have such a fantastic group of bright and enthusiastic young people come and spend some time with us.

“They have had great access across the force, and have also come up with some of their own ideas which we will definitely be looking at in the future.

“They were particularly surprised at the number of opportunities available in policing for both officers and staff, and many left with policing earmarked as their career of choice for the future.

“I would like to thank all of them for their positive attitude and energy over the past two weeks and really hope it has helped convince them to consider a career in policing.”

The Office of the Police and Crime Commissioner (OPCC) were the first to host the students for three days to give them an insight into the work of the Police and Crime Commissioner and OPCC.

Bedfordshire Police and Crime Commissioner, Festus Akinbusoye, said: “I am truly humbled and blown away at the enthusiasm and passion from all of these students.

“During their time in my office they planned and executed some real-life campaigns that will benefit our communities.

“What an impact they are had. The students have bright futures ahead of them and I wish them all the best for the future”.

Anyone interested in a future work experience placement with Bedfordshire Police will be able to apply in January 2023, which will be publicised in due course.
